On day 10 of my Iceland Ring Road trip I said good On day 10 of my Iceland Ring Road trip I said goodbye to Mývatn and headed further west across the northern regions of Iceland. After the mandatory stop at Goðafoss (a beautiful waterfall that comes with a beautiful story) and a brief stroll through Akureyri old town (where I almost died by cake and hot chocolate) I spent the rest of this very rainy day immersing in cultural tourism at Siglufjörður. I learned a lot about fishing, herring, fish processing, and now have a much better grasp on the Great Icelandic Herring Saga of the first half of 20th century. I love learning new things this way. Now I want to go to Norway – another country with a lot of fishing stories to tell :)

And tomorrow I will be staying at a hotel converted from an old dormitory for fish factory workers. Ah, the excitement :)

Siglufjörður, by the way, is a beautiful fjord. If only the weather was a little bit better.

Day 1 of the Ring Road trip. The weather is harsh Day 1 of the Ring Road trip.

The weather is harsh: can be windy, can be chilly, and it can rain anytime. The landscape is majestic – love those endless green slopes completely devoid of trees. I know this is not how it was supposed to be (deforestation etc.), but I still think it’s beautiful. Reminds me of Hawaii, Lord Howe Island and New Zealand (just a little bit).

What I saw today:

Helgufoss waterfall – skippable.

Thorufoss waterfall – beautiful.

Geysir geothermal area – it’s not Yellowstone, not even Rotorua or Beppu, but trying to catch the geyser on camera was fun (see reel).

Gullfoss waterfall – simply stunning. This was the highlight of my day (see reel).

Secret Lagoon – well… nobody does hot springs better than the Japanese, that’s the fact.

And so far I’m really enjoying Icelandic food. Yes, it’s pricy, but tastes really good. I was expecting something along the lines of British (didn’t have the best food experience in London). Happy to be pleasantly surprised.

Day 8 of my Iceland Ring Road trip was a long day, Day 8 of my Iceland Ring Road trip was a long day, mainly due to long driving times, but I’ve had other challenges as well. After a beautiful morning at Seyðisfjörður (the most charming little town I’ve seen in Iceland so far) I headed to Borgarfjordur eystri – one detour I planned to make on my way to Mývatn. It’s a very remote place in the northern part of Eastfjords knows for its scenery and elves (among other things). I wanted to go mainly for the elves, but scenery was also a consideration. Anyways, all was good until I hit the unpaved section of the road that I didn’t know about, and my GPS was telling me that I still had 32 miles to go. I almost turned back at this point - 32 miles of gravel road on a rental Toyota Yaris is very unpleasant - but eventually decided to google and found out that it’s just one section of the road. So I bravely went ahead – the section turned out to be just 8 miles long (still unpleasant, but doable). I was rewarded with amazing vistas from the remaining of the road – and the wonderful experience at Álfaborg (Elf Rock). If you’re a meditator, spiritual practitioner or just a person with heightened sensitivity – I recommend. Very interesting power spot in Iceland.

Today was also the day I got myself acquainted with Icelandic police. I was wondering since day 1 how much police is there in Iceland and where they all are – and also why some people on the road are driving too fast, while others are driving too slow. I was probably thinking too loud, so the Universe granted me with answers. The police is, obviously, on the Ring Road, and people who are driving too fast simply haven’t encountered them yet :)

Anyways, the officer was very kind and let me off with a warning. Now I’ll be joining the ranks of the slow people on the road :)

Total driving time today (without stops) – 6 hours. Staying at Mývatn for 2 nights – let’s see how much of it I can explore under the forecasted rain. Today I just stopped at Námaskarð Pass to take pictures of colorful fumaroles.

I’ll be soon running out of adjectives to descri I’ll be soon running out of adjectives to describe how beautiful Iceland is. The scenery gets more dramatic the further south you go, where I am now (between Holt and Vik) the land mass rises so abruptly from the sea level it’s just breathtaking, on the right side everything is absolutely flat, disappearing into the sea, on the left – sheer cliffs with dozens of waterfalls. I’ll take closer look at this landscape tomorrow, today was really all about the Westman Islands, which are breathtaking in their own right (and also a Dunnett location).

Day 3 of my Ring Road trip was really long, I got to Heimaey on the first ferry and left on the one before last, and after getting off the ferry quickly stopped by Seljalandsfoss waterfall on my way to the guesthouse.

What I enjoyed the most today:

Amazing scenery of Westman Islands

My fist puffins (see reel) and beluga whales at Sea Sanctuary in Heimaey. I also saw some puffins in the sea from the boat, but no puffins on land, September is too late for that already.

Learning about 1973 volcanic eruption in Heimaey (when you live on a volcano, sometimes volcano comes to your home…)

Seljalandsfoss waterfall (yeah, it’s cool when you can get behind the waterfall, especially of that size).

When I studied French in school I used to know a l When I studied French in school I used to know a lot about Paris. Most of this knowledge has faded away together with my French, but even for those bits and pieces that remain, learning about it is not the same as seeing it with your own eyes. And it isn’t just about seeing either. I’ve actually been to Paris twice before but so briefly I couldn’t get any real feel of the city. The impression I got then wasn’t even all that good. Now that I’m discovering Paris very, very slowly – avoiding the crowds, going with the flow of the weather – all those places from textbooks and articles in my childhood for the first time come to life for me.

It's impossible to talk about Victoria without men It's impossible to talk about Victoria without mentioning the Butchart Gardens - virtually the most popular attraction here. I was sceptical at first, but after visiting it I see where all the hype is coming from. The sunken garden (the one inside former quarry) is one of the most beautiful examples of gardening art I've seen in my life. The Japanese garden is also very nice, so I highly recommend, but I think it's best to avoid weekends. Lots and lots of people here.

Will put more photos in stories.

Day 9 of my Iceland Ring Road trip was a badly nee Day 9 of my Iceland Ring Road trip was a badly needed slow day that I made happen by forgoing the idea of driving the Diamond Circle in a 2WD. There’s a 32 mile section of gravel road between Dettifoss and Asbyrgi and I’d rather not see another whale watching village (have seen them plenty in other places) and another canyon (same here) than experience miles upon miles of Icelandic gravel road again.

So I just went to Dettifoss instead, collecting smaller Mývatn area sights along the way, and my sincere strongest impression of Mývatn is: OMG the flies! They’re everywhere, it’s crazy, it’s hard to see and hard to breathe, I’ve encountered flies before, but not like that. Many people were wearing protective head covers – they are probably selling in local souvenir shops, but I didn’t want to buy one just for today. To say the truth, it wasn’t equally bad everywhere. Some areas have them more, some have them less, so the flies didn't completely ruin my day.

To wrap up the day I went to Mývatn Nature Baths. The water and the scenery are good. Everything else – well, as you know I’m strongly biased, or rather spoiled by years of soaking in hot springs in Japan, so. I will probably not get out of my way to visit another hot spring in Iceland – except for if I stumble upon a natural spring completely free of people, but the probability of that happening is close to zero. Everyone actively loves Iceland now.

Day 6 of my Iceland Ring Road trip was mostly spen Day 6 of my Iceland Ring Road trip was mostly spent in the Glacier Lagoon. Yes, again. When planning the trip, I listened to other travelers and allowed myself plenty of time here. Yesterday I made a quick stop for about 1 hour at sunset. Today I went again in the morning for the Zodiac boat tour (photo of me in full body armor in stories) and stayed until afternoon, taking it all in.

What can I say. There isn’t many places on Earth you can comfortably drive up to where chunks of glacier are scattered across the beach and you can go on a boat in a lake full of icebergs. This is the first time in my life I’ve seen something like this. I know in Alaska there is a similar place, but I haven’t been to Alaska yet, so can’t compare. Hopefully, someday.

I will be spending 3 weeks in Iceland, followed by 5 weeks in France (if France doesn't close its border to Americans by then, which I sincerely hope it doesn't).

This is my first look at Reykjavik. Gloomy, but beautiful. Looking forward to the Ring Road trip.

Slowly but surely falling in love with Paris.

I’m getting a hang of it – being slow, I mean. I go out every other day, picking one place, doing one thing - like seeing one floor of d’Orsay museum at a time and then just heading for a restaurant :) I should have planned for 2 months here instead of one, but at the time I wasn’t sure. Now I know for sure that I can live like this and I’m really looking forward to it. Winter in Thailand, spring maybe (please!) in Japan. I’ve stopped hoping for China reopening in any foreseeable future, but maybe Taiwan… Maybe Singapore? Anywhere they speak Mandarin, of any kind. I’m not being picky anymore. Please.
