Geographically the town of Kitsuki is situated on Kunisaki peninsula, but I’m not including it in my 2-day itinerary because it felt like a separate trip. I stayed overnight in Beppu and the next morning hopped on a train to visit this little castle town before heading to my next destination, Yufuin.
I’ve seen many castle towns in Japan, and this is one of the best. The samurai districts are well preserved, the place feels very authentic. There’s a lot to see – and, of course, it looks good on the pictures.

Practicalities
I used a train from Beppu to Kitsuki station. The station is not in the city center, so I took a taxi there and back (about 10 min ride). Going by bus from Beppu is also and option. Bus will take you to the city center (no need for taxi this way).
