Planning an overnight stay at Fuji 5 lakes area I was, naturally, in search of a place offering views of Mt Fuji. Preferably from an outdoor hot spring bath. Yamadaya Hotel on Lake Shojiko met both conditions, and for a very reasonable price, so I booked it – and it didn’t disappoint.

Although it was cloudy on the day of my stay, Fuji was visible from the hotel in the evening. I arrived early, at 4:30, grabbed the key to the private outdoor bath (available here on the first come, fist serve basis for no additional fee) and thoroughly enjoyed the view. After that I enjoyed it some more from my room, and then headed to the dining hall for dinner. The food wasn’t bad, but wasn’t particularly good either. If you’re able to read Japanese language reviews of this place you might see how many people complain about food here. I’m guessing that for someone not very familiar with how quality Japanese ryokan meal should taste that wouldn’t be an issue. It wasn’t that big of an issue for me (I was there mainly for the view anyways), but I did notice the difference. Well, that might be one of the reasons for the reasonable price (another is the older building and facilities).
Still, I was completely satisfied with my stay here. I got my bath, twice (I used the common bath next morning), and I got my Fuji. Would totally come back again.

The hotel is very easy to find – there’s one road going along the shore and it stands right on it. The bus stop is close nearby for those using public transportation, and for those coming by car – parking is ample and easy.
