Traveling further south down the coastline, the next stop on my Vietnam itinerary was to be Hoian, and for transfer to Hoian from Hue I chose again a private car with driver. There are other, cheaper ways to get there, but considering the relatively close distance and the variety of places worth seeing along the way, it seemed like the best option.

The drive is notoriously scenic, offering both ocean and mountain views.

Wedding photoshoot in progress – we saw a few of them along the way. The highway on the background is a newer, faster route for regular traffic – we’re not going there, we’re going to the curvy Hai Van pass road which is now used mostly by tourists.

Having descended from the pass, we now enter the city of Danang and make a longer stop at Marble Mountains – a complex of limestone peaks with caves housing various Buddhist structures.

An entrance ticket gets you (in an elevator) inside one of the Buddhist sanctuaries.

Caves are everywhere here, but this is supposedly the largest of them all.

It was less dramatic than the one at Perfume Pagoda, but also much less crowded, and the beams of light falling through the cracks in the roof were absolutely magical.

We spent about an hour at Marble Mountains, and the whole journey through the Hai Van pass took us about 4.5 hours. By late afternoon I was checked at my hotel in Hoian and still had the whole evening to see the sights there.
